Studio in a School Awards Scholarships at P.S. Art 2011
As Rainey Ovallé talks about his self-portrait, one of 60 works on view at the June 14th opening of P.S. Art 2011: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is apparent that the title Resurfacing, like his acrylic painting, has many layers. Rainey, one of 12 graduating seniors to receive a $1,500 scholarship in this curated show spanning kindergarten through high school, will attend Fordham University in the fall to continue his art studies. He is a serious young man who describes the process of creating this artwork as giving him “purpose, direction and hope.” He exudes a quiet pride in his accomplishment and seems incredulous that his work is on display in The Met. Rainey credits his teacher Jeremy Nadel for helping him “put his heart and soul into every piece.”
