On June 14, the NYC Department of Education's annual city-wide public school exhibition, PS Art, opened at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year's edition of PS Art marks the fourth year that Studio in a School underwrites and coordinates this competition. PS Art 2011 presents 60 paintings, prints, sculptures, mixed-media works, collages, and drawings created by students ages 5 through 19.

At the opening reception, STUDIO honored 12 high school seniors with scholarships. Each recipient received a $1,500 scholarship to further their art study.

PS Art 2011 will be on view in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education at the Met until August 7, 2011.

On May 9th, STUDIO launched the STUDIO Artists Community at the 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery. Artists' Eyes: Children's Art from Studio in a School served as the backdrop for the 75 guests, which consisted of prominent artists, STUDIO artist/instructors, and STUDIO supporters.

NEW YORK, May 9, 2011—Studio in a School is proud to announce the launch of the STUDIO Artists Community, an altruistic group of artists who support STUDIO'S efforts to help New York City’s youth develop their own creative vision through the visual arts. Members have the opportunity to support the city’s young artists and STUDIO by sharing their creative wisdom and expertise, helping students through mentoring, and spreading the word about the importance of arts education.

“We decided to create the STUDIO Artists Community because we believe that New York City's artists and arts community have a unique perspective and a special responsibility to support arts education and nurture the creative spirit of our city's young people,“ said STUDIO'S President & CEO, Tom Cahill.

“Learning to make art is learning to be creative, an attitude and skill that can be useful to a person in any of life’s endeavors,” says artist Clifford Ross, one of the Founding Members of the community. “Art making is about openness, freedom, and individuality—important qualities to instill in young people.”
