“We decided to create the STUDIO Artists Community because we believe that New York City's artists and arts community have a unique perspective and a special responsibility to support arts education and nurture the creative spirit of our city's young people,“ said STUDIO'S President & CEO, Tom Cahill.
“Learning to make art is learning to be creative, an attitude and skill that can be useful to a person in any of life’s endeavors,” says artist Clifford Ross, one of the Founding Members of the community. “Art making is about openness, freedom, and individuality—important qualities to instill in young people.”
Founded in 1977 by Agnes Gund, STUDIO in a School is a not-for-profit organization that, through the guidance of professional artists, provides visual arts programs to the city's youth, working in public schools, childcare centers, and community-based organizations. At up to 140 Studio sites annually, children work with dedicated artist/instructors who share tools and techniques for making art in a rich variety of media. Providing opportunities for exploration, discovery and sharing, these art-making activities foster learning experiences that support skills and behavior intrinsic to intellectual and social growth.
